to West Poplar Red Angus
West Poplar Red Angus is a family run mixed farming operation located in south central Saskatchewan right on the United States border. We run approximately 190 cow-calf pairs and annually crop 1600 acres of farm land. We started mixed farming in 1982 and bought our first purebred Red Angus females in 1992. Of the 190 head cow-calf operation, approximately 70% are registered Red Angus and the rest commercial Angus cross cows.
We start calving around the first of February. In the first cycle only the purebreds are calving but come the second cycle the commercial herd starts calving as well. This staggered start to calving takes some of the pressure off of our barns at calving time. We don’t AI any of the commercial herd but usually AI or corral breed the purebred females for one cycle.
When we select our herdsires there are a few things that are very important to us. Feet are a very important trait in any herd, if an animal cannot walk it cannot graze properly. Temperament is also very important to us. Life is too short to risk it with high-strung cattle. We would not sacrifice maternal traits just for the sake of performance either. Performance is important but we feel that there are sires out there that can strike a balance between the two.
We do not spend a lot of time on the show road, but we have been to Agribition with a few head every year since 1999. We feel it is important to keep in touch with other breeders and Agribition enables us to do this.
We have been and still are building our herd so we limit the number of females that we sell. We have consigned females to the Angus Pride Sale
and the Masterpiece Sale at Agribition.
